I worked from five countries last year. Here is the practical guide I wish someone had given me first.

Priorities in order

  1. Internet — verify real speed, not hotel marketing
  2. Time zone overlap with colleagues/clients
  3. Cost of living — "cheap and stable" beats "Instagram-famous"
  4. Scenery comes fourth, honestly

The packing rule

Everything fits in a carry-on. If it does not, carry less. Laundry exists everywhere.

Non-negotiable kit:
- Backup drive (cloud AND physical)
- Power bank + universal adapter
- Noise-cancelling headphones
- Offline copies of key documents

Money and admin

  • Notify your bank before departure (twice)
  • Copy your passport + visa pages to the cloud
  • Keep digital receipts in one folder — tax season will thank you

The truth about 'location independence'

You are more productive, not less — but you also need boundaries. Done properly, a working day in a new city ends with real adventure. Done poorly, it is just a hotel room in a warmer time zone.

Work first, explore after 5pm. That is the whole secret.
