What you are actually buying

Travel insurance is not one product. It is a bundle of separate promises, and the fine print decides which ones apply.

  • Medical and hospital, the part that matters most overseas
  • Cancellation and curtailment, if you pull out before or during the trip
  • Baggage and belongings, usually capped per item and per bag
  • Personal liability, if you accidentally damage something or someone

The exclusions that catch people out

Most complaints come from exclusions travellers never read.

  1. Adventure activities. Scooters, jet skis, certain hikes and off-piste skiing can be excluded unless you pay extra.
  2. Pre-existing conditions. Undeclared medical history is the fastest way to get a claim rejected.
  3. Intoxication. Incidents after a big night are frequently refused.
  4. Left it late. Cover bought after a flight is delayed or a storm is named will not pay out.
  5. Cheap electronics. Laptops and cameras often sit under a low per-item limit.

How to make a claim that sticks

  • Report theft to police and get a written report before you leave
  • Keep every receipt, photo and medical note
  • Contact the insurer as soon as the problem happens, not when you get home
  • Claim within the stated window, often 30 days

The policy is not there to save you money. It is there to stop one bad week from following you home for years.

When skipping it is reasonable

A single overnight flight within your own country, a trip already covered by your bank card, or a domestic weekend where the worst case is a refunded hotel. Anything with a plane, a hospital or a non-refundable booking deserves a proper read of the product disclosure statement.

Ten minutes of reading now is genuinely the most boring, highest-return thing you will do before you fly.
