Google Search Console (GSC) is free, made by Google, and tells you exactly how your site appears in search. If you only use one SEO tool, make it this one.

What Search Console shows you

  • Which searches you appear for, and how often.
  • Your average position for each one.
  • Which pages get impressions and clicks.
  • Errors Google finds when crawling your site.

No guessing. It is Google telling you what it thinks of your pages.

How to set it up

  1. Sign in at search.google.com/search-console with a Google account.
  2. Add your site as a property, either as a domain or a URL prefix.
  3. Verify ownership — usually by adding a DNS record or an HTML tag.
  4. Wait a day or two for data to appear.

The 4 reports to check first

Performance — your queries, pages, clicks and positions. This is where you find near-misses (positions 8 to 20) to improve.

Pages — which URLs are indexed, which are excluded, and why.

Sitemaps — confirm Google has your sitemap and is reading it.

Core Web Vitals — a quick read on speed and mobile experience.

A simple weekly routine

  • Check Performance: any query with impressions but no clicks?
  • Find pages sitting at position 8 to 20 and improve them.
  • Fix any new coverage errors in Pages.
  • Link to new posts so they get discovered.

Common questions

Is Google Search Console free?

Yes. It is a free tool from Google and there is no paid tier.

How long until Search Console shows data?

A day or two for a new property, and up to a few weeks before you have enough data to read a trend.

What is a good average position in Search Console?

Page one is positions 1 to 10. Positions 8 to 20 are the most useful to improve, because they are close and Google already considers them relevant.

Do I need Search Console and Analytics?

They answer different questions. Search Console shows how people find you; Analytics shows what they do once they arrive.
