Writing a post and walking away is not a strategy. Tracking keywords is how you find out whether the work is paying off, and which pages to fix next.

What tracking a keyword means

Tracking means checking, over time, where your page ranks for a specific phrase. Not once, but repeatedly, so you can see a trend.

Why tracking matters

  • It tells you which pages are climbing and worth improving further.
  • It tells you which are slipping before traffic drops.
  • It shows new phrases people are finding you for.
  • It keeps you honest about what is actually working.

The free way to do it

Google Search Console does not show daily rankings, but it shows average position over time for every query you appear for. That is enough to spot direction.

  1. Open Search Console and go to Performance.
  2. Filter to a page you care about.
  3. Compare this month to last month for the same queries.

The paid way

Rank trackers check your position daily for a fixed list of keywords. They are useful once you have a list of phrases you are deliberately targeting — not before.

What to actually track

Do not track hundreds of vanity keywords. Track the handful of phrases each important page is built around, plus any phrase where you sit between positions 8 and 20. Those are your quickest wins.

Common questions

Why do we track keywords?

Tracking shows whether your pages are climbing or slipping, so you know which to improve and which new phrases to target next.

Do I need paid tools to track keywords?

No. Search Console shows average position for free. Paid trackers add daily checks and competitor comparisons, which help but are not required to start.

How often should I check keyword rankings?

Weekly is plenty for a small site. Daily changes are mostly noise; look at the trend over a month.

What is a good keyword position?

Anything on page one. Positions between 8 and 20 are the most worth improving, because they are close and Google already considers them relevant.
