You have heard the term ChatGPT a thousand times. But what is it, really?

The short version

ChatGPT is a language model — a piece of software trained on a huge amount of text that learns to predict which word is most likely to come next.

How it works

  1. It is fed millions of books, articles and web pages.
  2. During training, it learns patterns in how words are used together.
  3. When you type a prompt, it generates a response one word at a time, choosing the most probable next word.

That is it. Under the hood there is no magic — just math, statistics and a very large number of calculations.

Why it feels so smart

Because it has "read" so much text, it can imitate human writing remarkably well. It understands context, tone and structure — but it does not understand meaning the way we do.

Where it trips up

  • It makes things up (called hallucination) when it is unsure.
  • It has no memory of what happened before for long conversations.
  • It can be confidently wrong.

The takeaway

Treat AI like a very fast intern: brilliant at first drafts, summaries and starting points — but always check the facts before relying on it.

Great for: drafting, brainstorming, summarising
Shaky at: exact facts, current events, math
Use it for: starting points, not final answers

Common questions

Is ChatGPT really AI?

Yes, in the sense that it is machine-learning software doing a job we used to need a person for. It is narrow AI, not a thinking mind: it predicts the next word, it does not understand meaning the way you do.

Is ChatGPT artificial intelligence or just a chatbot?

Both. ChatGPT is a chatbot built on a large language model, which is a type of artificial intelligence. The chat window is the interface; the model underneath is the AI.

How does ChatGPT work?

It was trained on a huge amount of text to predict the most likely next word. When you send a prompt it writes a reply one word at a time, using patterns from training rather than looking anything up.

What is ChatGPT used for?

Drafting, brainstorming, summarising and explaining ideas. Treat it as a fast first-draft tool and check the facts before you rely on them.
