How to Switch Careers Without Starting From Zero

The scariest part of changing careers is the image: back to square one, entry salary, proving yourself for years. It is mostly wrong. I changed industries at 34 and climbed across, not down.
The three-part move
1. Translate what you already do
Nobody wants "I answered customer emails". Everyone wants "I resolved 40+ daily issues and cut complaint spikes by keeping a weekly root-cause log". Write your past in the language of outcomes — those transfer everywhere.
2. Choose a bridge, not a pit
Rather than quitting everything to study for a year, find the overlap: the role in your target field where your current skills already pay. For me it was moving from operations into product — the title changed, the "getting things shipped through other people" skill did not.
3. Prove the skill, not the certificate
A certificate shows you watched. A small project shows you can. Build one visible thing in your new field — a portfolio page, a side project, a documented experiment. It doubles as your answer in every interview.
The rules
- Network before you apply — most good career moves start with a conversation, not a form
- Keep income flowing — switch jobs, do not restart from zero: negotiate on experience
- Expect a two-year curve — competent quickly, expert after effort; do not panic in the first six months
The truth
Employers increasingly hire for what you can do next, not what your last title said. Your history is not a handicap — it is the collection of transferable skills you have already paid for. Go sell them somewhere that pays more.
