Everyone talks about freedom; nobody mentions the invoice chasing. Here is my first year of freelancing — the numbers.
The good numbers
- Income: mostly grown by month 6
- Hourly rate: rose every quarter once I stopped undercharging
- Repeat clients: 60% of income came from people who hired me again
The ugly numbers
- Non-billable time: almost 20% — admin, proposals, "quick calls"
- Late payments: 3 clients who took over 45 days
- Zero-earning days: at least 3 a month, and they hurt
The three rules I wish I started with
- Save 25% of every invoice — taxes and slow months are coming.
- Charge for the outcome, not the hour — a 3-hour task does not price 3 hours; it prices the years it took to do it fast.
- Never work without a deposit — 50% up front ends most payment problems.
Month 1-3: build a client base, low rates, accept it
Month 4-6: raise rates, pick a niche
Month 7-12: drop low-paid work, double down on repeat clients
Would I do it again?
Yes — but with a year of savings in the bank first. Freedom feels better when your bills do not depend on this week's invoice.
