Building a Sleep Routine That Actually Works

A good night's sleep is the lever behind everything else — and the most steamed-over advice on the internet. Here is what actually held up.
What the research says (not the influencers)
- Same wake time beats same sleep time. Even if you sleep late, waking at a consistent hour anchors your rhythm.
- Light is the main controller. Morning sunlight tells your brain the day started; screens at midnight tell it the opposite.
- Cooler rooms help. Around 18 °C is the commonly cited sweet spot.
The routine I keep
- Same wake time, including weekends
- Morning light within an hour of waking
- Last coffee before 2pm
- Screens off 30 minutes before bed
- Bedroom only for sleeping (and one occasional book)
The one hack that changed everything
The 20-minute rule. If you are awake in bed for 20 minutes, get up and do something boring until you feel tired. Lying there staring at the ceiling teaches your brain that bed = frustrating. Breaking that association fixed my sleep better than any app.
Routine is boring, which is exactly why it works.
Skip the expensive sleep gadgets. Start with light, consistency and a cooler room — and let sleep find you.
