Nobody is watching you

This is the first thing to accept and the hardest. The person squatting badly in the corner is worried about their own set. Everyone in that room was once the new person who did not know where anything was.

The awkwardness you feel is real, but it is mostly yours. It fades around week three, usually sooner.

Choose your moment

Timing changes the room entirely.

  • Mid-morning or mid-afternoon on weekdays is quietest
  • Avoid the first week of January if you can, it is chaos
  • Go at the same time each visit, familiar faces become normal faces
  • Book a tour first, most gyms walk you around with no obligation

Your first four sessions

Do less than you think. The goal is to learn the room and leave feeling capable.

  1. Session one: machines only. Ten minutes warm up, three exercises, two sets each.
  2. Session two: repeat session one with slightly more weight or one extra rep.
  3. Session three: add one free weight movement, a dumbbell bench press or a goblet squat.
  4. Session four: repeat the whole routine from the start.

Three sets of eight to ten reps is a perfectly respectable program for a month.

ExerciseWhat it teaches you
Goblet squatHow to brace and sit down with weight
Dumbbell bench pressUpper body pushing without a bar above your throat
Seated cable rowPulling without balancing anything
Hip thrust or deadlift setupHow to hinge safely

Scripts for the hard parts

You do not need charm. You need two sentences.

"Hey, are you still using this?" and "Sorry, how many sets do you have left?" That is the entire social skill required in a gym.

If a machine has you stuck, ask the nearest staff member. They expect it, it is literally their job.

Make it automatic

Book the sessions in your calendar like classes. Lay out your gym clothes the night before. Keep the first two weeks to twice a week if that is what gets you through the door.

Progress is not the point yet. Attendance is. Once showing up feels boring, you have already beaten most of the anxiety.

Signs you are doing it right

  • You stop rehearsing the route in your head
  • You recognise two or three faces and nod at them
  • You know where the spare benches are
  • You finish a session without checking your phone between every set

The people who look confident are simply people who have been coming for longer. Give yourself a month and you will be one of them.
