AI in Education: Help or Hype?

Walk into any lecture today and half the students are quietly asking an AI for answers. Is that the end of learning — or the start of something better?
What AI is genuinely good at in education
- Personalised explanations — ask it to explain a topic "like I am 12" and it adapts.
- Practice quizzes — instant generated questions for revision.
- Feedback on drafts — before the teacher even sees them.
The real danger
AI does not fail students because it is wrong — it fails them because it gives answers instead of understanding. Copy a generated essay and you have learned nothing.
The rule that keeps it honest
Use AI for the first and last draft — never the thinking in between.
| Phase | Use AI? |
|---|---|
| Understanding a concept | Yes |
| Practising by yourself | No |
| Polishing your work | Yes |
| Generating your argument | No |
The bigger picture
The exams AI can pass today will not matter in ten years. What will matter: knowing what to ask, how to verify, and how to use tools honestly — which is exactly what learning with AI, done properly, teaches.
