Your Website Does Not Need to Look Like Every Other Website

I spent months making websites that looked professional and felt interchangeable. Same rounded cards. Same purple gradient. Same hero section with three buttons. When I showed a friend a site I was proud of, she said, "This looks like every startup."

She was being kind, but she was not wrong.

Personality beats polish

A memorable site does not need custom code or a complicated animation. Start with one opinion and make the whole page support it:

  • Choose a type style with personality, then use it consistently.
  • Pick a small colour palette instead of using every shade available.
  • Write like a person, not a brand trying to sound impressive.
  • Give one important element more space than the rest.

The basics are still boring on purpose

Fast pages, readable text, clear buttons and a contact link are not uncool. They are what let someone actually use what you made. A clever design cannot rescue a site that takes ten seconds to load or makes the next step unclear.

A 30-minute exercise

Open your website on your phone. Ask someone to find what you do and how to contact you. Do not explain anything. Watch where they hesitate. That short test is more useful than staring at your design for an hour.

The verdict

Make it recognisably yours, not deliberately strange. Your website does not have to shout to be memorable. Sometimes one honest sentence, a consistent colour and a layout that respects the reader are enough.
