What My Kids Taught Me About Technology

I assumed my children needed to be protected from technology — that I, as the adult, understood it better. A few years in, I am not so sure.
What I learned from watching them
Curiosity before fear. A seven-year-old with a new app does not fear it; they poke, tap and discover. Somewhere along the way, adults swapped that curiosity for caution.
They ask better questions. "Why does the game know I am tired?" — I had never once thought to question where apps get their assumptions.
The healthy boundaries we found together
- Screens off in bedrooms at night — for all of us, parents included
- Tech time is not a reward or punishment; it is a normal part of the day
- We talk about what they saw online like we talk about school
The honest takeaway
Our kids will live in a world of AI, deepfakes and tools we cannot imagine. Panicking about it helps nobody. Teaching them to ask "How does this work?" and "Who made this?" — that survives any upgrade.
The best tech mentorship is a conversation, not a ban.
