It was a rainy Tuesday. I was running late, distracted, and not in the mood for pleasantries. But when I reached the coffee shop door, I noticed a woman behind me struggling with two bags and an umbrella.

I held the door. She smiled. "Thank you so much. You have no idea how much I needed that."

Something about the way she said it made me pause. It was not just about the door. She looked tired, overwhelmed. I asked if she was okay.

Turns out she had just lost her job that morning. She was on her way to pick up her kids and did not know how she was going to tell them. We talked for 10 minutes. I shared some contacts in my network. She cried. I hugged her.

A year later, I received an email. She had found a new job through one of my contacts. She was doing well. And she wanted to thank me — not for holding the door, but for stopping to ask if she was okay.

We underestimate the power of small acts. A door held open. A kind word. A moment of attention. You never know what ripple you are creating.
