Starting Over in a New City at 30

At 30 I moved to a city where I knew exactly zero people. It was not an easy decision; it was a reset I could not afford to skip.

The first month was brutal

Loneliness was a physical thing, a weight in my chest. I ate the same takeaway three times a week because cooking for nobody felt pointless. I learned that "it takes time" is not comfort — it is just a fact you have to survive.

What started to work

I put one word in front of every headline: just.

  • Just go to the coffee shop. Just sit at the counter.
  • Just say yes to the group run even though I am slow.
  • Just message the acquaintance of an acquaintance.

Small actions, repeated, quietly built a life.

The surprising gift

When nobody knows your history, you get to choose who you are now. Old labels — the shy one, the one who always... — vanished. I was just me, meeting people freshly.

If you are considering the leap

Do it with savings. Lower the cost of the first six months, because that is when it hurts. And remember: every person in that city was new once.

The first six months are the price. The years after are the reward.
