Learning Online as an Adult: What Actually Sticks

Online learning is free and unlimited and yet most of us finish almost nothing. After years of trial and error, here is what actually works.

Why courses fail

  • No deadline = no urgency
  • Watching feels like doing
  • Too much theory, too little practice

What actually stuck for me

One topic at a time. Not "learn marketing" — "learn how to write a product page". Narrow goals have a finish line.

Build while you watch. Every tutorial included a mini project. Knowing I had something to show pushed me to finish.

Teaching to someone else. Explaining what I learned to a friend (or writing an article) locked it in better than re-watching anything.

The method

  1. Pick one small skill
  2. Find one focused resource
  3. Do the practice, not just the theory
  4. Use it within a week on something real

A warning about the course graveyard

Courses you buy but never open are expensive furniture. Before buying, ask: "Can I learn this with 10 free YouTube videos plus practice?" Usually, the answer is yes.
